St. John's Episcopal Church has been designated a National Historic Landmark because the site possesses national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America. It was in St. John's Church on March 23, 1775, that Patrick Henry delivered his "liberty or death" speech, attaining a measure of undying fame.
