Fort Laramie began as a dusty, drab frontier outpost, as pictured in an 1868 photograph, but by the 1880s the Army had embarked upon a major cleanup and improvement campaign. By 1887, the post had been transformed with trees and grass, gaslights, boardwalks, picket fences, vine-covered verandas, and modern, comfortable quarters, even including birdbaths.
