Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota, established in 1975, preserves a remote border-lakes landscape where travel is defined by water. Named for the French-Canadian voyageurs of the fur-trade era, the region has been inhabited for nearly 10,000 years, from early Indigenous peoples to Ojibwe communities who later dominated the border country. European exploration arrived by about 1688, and later logging, dam building, and a brief gold rush further shaped the area. Set on ancient Canadian Shield bedrock and carved by glaciers, the park is known for its rugged shorelines, wildlife, fishing traditions, and boat-access campsites. It is Minnesota’s only national park.
