By September 1, 1854, Yreka had grown into a substantial town with several very good brick buildings, yet prices were high there, with nothing selling for less than two bits, a loaf of bread that had cost five cents selling for 25, and salt costing 25 per pound, as George McCowen observed after driving into town.
