Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, founded in 1798 in present-day Oceanside, became the largest of Alta California’s Spanish missions and remains one of the state’s most intact mission complexes. Named for Saint Louis IX of France, it oversaw major outposts, extensive agricultural lands, and a church completed in 1815. Its history is inseparable from the Luiseño people, whose lives were deeply disrupted by colonization, disease, and forced labor, a reality recorded by Pablo Tac in a rare Native account from around 1835. After secularization, many Indigenous laborers left for their home communities. Revived and restored from the late nineteenth century onward, the mission is now both an active parish and a major historic site.
