After the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, thousands of Washington County men and women served by volunteering or through the Selective Service Act. Hundreds of soldiers trained at Camp Travis in San Antonio and were still stateside when the war ended, but many troops went overseas. At least fifty-one men from Washington County—thirty Anglo Americans and twenty-one African Americans—died on active duty. They are honored as Gold Star heroes, with notable burials at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in France, Arlington National Cemetery, and cemeteries throughout Washington County and elsewhere. Their service and sacrifices continue to be remembered.
