Coretta Scott King founded the King Center in Atlanta in 1968. The center is dedicated to advancing King's philosophies of nonviolence and justice through its programs, exhibits, and tours. Located on Auburn Avenue, the facility houses many artifacts of King's life. King's gravesite is located at the King Center next to Ebenezer Baptist Church. In 1983, Congress passed legislation to make the third Monday in January a national holiday in honor of Dr. King. In 1974, the federal government added the King Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes Ebenezer Baptist Church, King's birth home on Auburn Avenue, and gravesite.
