Several early businesses helped define Mooresville’s commercial life. The building at 134 Main St., shown as the D.K. McNeely and Son store circa 1919, is probably the oldest standing commercial structure in town. Originally the Harris and Sherrill dry goods store, it was purchased by D. K. McNeely in the early 1890's, and the McNeely family owned it for about 100 years until it was sold in 1994; pictured are David Kilpatrick McNeely and Cyrus Carmi McNeely. The former home of Charles Mack and Sons Wholesale at 132 East Center Avenue later became the site of the Mooresville Museum after John and Christy Mack donated the building to the town in 2005. The Mack family began as door to door salesmen and by 1912 had expanded enough to open Mooresville first department store at 130 Main St. D.E. Turner and Co. Hardware Store, at 111 N. Main Street, has stood since 1898 and is the oldest business in Mooresville still operating under the same name it had circa 1899. D.E. Turner is shown leaning on what is believed to have been the town’s first gasoline pump, and the store interior has remained unchanged since it was built. McNeely Service Station is also identified as one of Mooresville’s early businesses.
