Kate's Mountain, south of White Sulphur Springs in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, rises 3,280 feet and is the highest peak in Greenbrier State Forest. It is named for Catherine "Kate" Carpenter, who fled to its summit with her child after her husband, Nicholas Carpenter, was killed during an Indian attack near Fort Dinwiddie in September 1756. The mountain also holds an important place in the region's literary and natural history. It inspired the 19th-century romantic poem The Mystic Circle of Kate's Mountain, published in part in 1860 and in full in 1895, and it is the type location for Kate's Mountain clover, Trifolium virginicum.
