Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park in central Key Largo preserves a substantial area of native hammock habitat on land once slated for intensive development. Named for local environmental activist Dagny Johnson, the park emerged after the 1982 collapse of the proposed Port Bougainville resort, which would have brought 15 hotels and more than 2,000 condominiums to the site. Its greatest significance is ecological: it protects one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States and provides critical habitat for the threatened Key Largo woodrat and Key Largo cotton mouse, species found only in this part of Key Largo.
