The original church remained much as it had been built for its first eighteen years. In 1886 it received its first bell at a cost of $319.51 and a new concrete foundation, and that same year its first pipe organ was purchased from Karl Barkhoff of Norwalk, Ohio, for $900 and installed before Easter. With no electric power, the organ used hand-pumped bellows, and Herman Westenfeldt, teacher of the congregation's German parochial school, was the first organist. In 1904 the church interior was extensively remodeled with a new altar, pulpit, and pews; arches created a chancel area, a sacristy division was made within it, the old sacristy was not then used, and a furnace replaced two wood stoves. An artist from Fort Wayne, Indiana, painted the altar pictures, and the old altar and pulpit were given to St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Ridgeville Corners for its new church. In 1912 an enlarged balcony was built. Electric service was added in 1919 when George Aschemeier wired the church and membership was purchased in the Okolona Farmers Light Company; an electric blower for the organ then ended the need to hand-pump the bellows. The last major remodeling of the old church came in 1928 under a committee that included Oberhaus, Martin Rickenberg, Edward Sonnenberg, George Wiemken, Carl Bockelman, and Fred, with Martin Rickenberg also serving as builder. Improvements included wings extending sixteen feet out and thirty feet wide on each side of the main structure, small entrance rooms in the front corners, a small organ room on the northwest corner, a full basement, plaster-painted walls, stained glass windows in the chancel and center entrance area, renewed use of the remodeled old sacristy, the addition of a molded picture of the Last Supper to the altar, and installation of a new Schantz pipe organ. The rebuilt church was rededicated on November 11, 1928, with festivities, guest clergy from Okolona, the Ridge, and Napoleon, and meals served by women of the congregation in the new basement.
