Begun in 1836 and finished in 1848, the Illinois and Michigan Canal was a historic artery of travel that carried pioneers and their produce between Lake Michigan and the Illinois Valley and figured largely in the development of northern Illinois. After fifty years of use, it was superseded by the deep waterway and is now devoted to recreational purposes.
