The Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, completed in 1882, was recognized as a Registered National Historic Landmark under the Historic Sites Act of August 21, 1935, for its exceptional value in illustrating the history of the United States, and it was also designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1968.
