In 1895, the Alpha Kappa Phi Society honored the Civil War service of more than 500 Hillsdale College soldiers who answered their country’s call, listing Alpha Kappa Phi volunteers who served in numerous infantry, cavalry, artillery, rifle, and staff assignments from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and the U.S.A., and memorializing heroic dead who died from wounds, exposure, illness, or combat-related causes at places including Antietam, Fortress Monroe, Lexington, Corinth, Gettysburg, Pleasant Hill, Yellow Tavern, Point Lookout, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, the Wilderness, Chickamauga, Petersburgh, and Saulsbury, along with Samuel A. Cherry, killed at Fort Niobrara, Nebraska, in 1881.
