Houghton-Douglass Falls, between Laurium and Lake Linden in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, drops 110 feet along Hammell Creek and is the state’s tallest waterfall. Set in a deep gorge with steep walls and loose, sharp rock, it has long been a hazardous place, and multiple deaths have been reported there, including one in September 2011. Named for Douglass Houghton and C.C. Douglass, the falls remained on private land for many years with restricted access. After the state acquired 115 acres in 2018, Michigan began developing the area as a scenic site with safer public access, adding parking, paths, a bridge, observation decks, and other improvements.
