American patrols cut off any communication with the outside world, and the British army had barely enough food left to last a week. Although the field fortifications were formidable, the outnumbered defenders were bone weary and rain-soaked. With each passing hour, the Americans tightened their grip on eventual victory as they fired from cannon batteries and placed riflemen in the tops of trees, keeping their distance to starve the British out.
