During General Robert E. Lee's invasion of Maryland in September 1862, Confederate troops under General Fitzhugh Lee patrolled this area. General J.E. B. Stuart and his Confederate cavalry also passed through New Market while escaping Union forces on their return from a raid in Pennsylvania.
