Built by October 1892, this two-story, three-bay brick jail served Liberty County longer than any of its earlier jails. Although no record of its construction or architect survives, the contractor, Mr. Parkhill, had completed it with what were then considered all the modern improvements and conveniences of a first-class prison. Its interior was divided by a brick wall into two sections containing a bull-pen, or drunk tank, and two cells downstairs, with two cells and the upper part of the bull-pen upstairs. Eighty years later, Georgia Governor Lester Maddox condemned it as a rotten, filthy rathole. After a new county jail opened in 1969, the old jail was sold at auction on March 3, 1970, to the Liberty County Historical Society, which eventually donated the building to the City of Hinesville. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
