In Marion County near the Ocklawaha River, the Hutto/Martin Site is likely both the principal town of the Timucuan chiefdom of Acuera and the later Spanish mission of Santa Lucia de Acuera. It is linked to some of the earliest Spanish accounts of interior Florida, including the de Soto expedition, and traces a shift from Acuera resistance to later submission and missionization. Excavations uncovered mission-era Spanish structures, Native residential remains, a church, and burial pits, while ceramics and burial patterns suggest the Acuera retained significant cultural autonomy. Together, archaeology and Spanish records make the site crucial to understanding contact-era Florida.
