This memorial honors the men and women of the District 5 School Area in Spartanburg County who served in the armed forces of the United States, especially those who gave their lives in service. It was erected by the people of the area and dedicated on May 26, 1991. The names of local war dead are recorded by branch and conflict, including members of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, and U.S. Air Force who were killed in action in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, 1968, 1982, and 2005. It also commends area members of the U.S. armed forces who served during the Gulf War of 1990-1991. From this location, Battery B, 1st Battalion, 178th Field Artillery Regiment, South Carolina National Guard, departed for Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on January 27, 1941, to be inducted into the U.S. Army and served until the end of World War II in 1945.
