European flowers that bloomed at the time of Pentecost were known as Pentecost flowers. In Germany, Pentecost is called "Pinkster," and this flower became known as Pinks, or English Pinks. The flower is especially associated with the Holy Spirit because its petals are seen to represent the tongues of flame of the descending Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
