Brantley Lake State Park lies about 12 miles north of Carlsbad in New Mexico, centered on Brantley Lake, a reservoir on the Pecos River created in the 1980s by Brantley Dam. Notable as the state’s southernmost lake, the reservoir covers about 4,000 acres, though its size varies with the river’s irregular flow and the desert climate. The lake is a destination for boating and fishing, with bass, white bass, walleye, catfish, bluegill, carp, and crappie. The park also offers 51 electric campsites, showers, a playground, a visitor center, and other amenities. After a 2005 study found high DDT levels in fish, catch-and-release was recommended until the advisory ended in 2018.
