The Initial Point for the survey of the Louisiana Purchase Territory established two fundamental lines for land transactions throughout the western United States: the east-west Baseline and the north-south Fifth Principal Meridian. The Baseline runs due west from this site and served as the survey line for 12 of the 13 states formed from the Louisiana Purchase Territory. This role in the surveying of the territory is the reason the site has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
