Taft Archeological Site No. 029-5411, in Mason Neck State Park at Lorton, Virginia, preserves evidence of a prehistoric and possibly proto-historic American Indian camp. This upland site, about 50 by 80 meters, is multi-component and stratified, with layered deposits from more than one period. Artifacts show a long span of use, from about 2000 B.C., indicated by a Savannah River point, to about A.D. 1560, and suggest a possible connection to the Dogue. Excavated in three stages from May through August 1987, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
