Missionary Ridge, a long, narrow height along the eastern side of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was named for early missionaries who used paths over it while traveling to Brainerd Village and the Cherokee settlement beyond. Also once called Mission Ridge, it served as a corridor of movement before becoming famous for war. On November 25, 1863, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and George H. Thomas defeated Braxton Bragg’s Confederate army there in the Battle of Missionary Ridge, helping lift the siege of Chattanooga. The ridge later remained part of the living city, including efforts to control kudzu with goats and llamas in 2007.
