Moonlite Theatre near Abingdon, Virginia, opened in 1949 as a drive-in developed by T. D. Field and became a rare surviving example of a once-common roadside attraction. Designed for 454 cars, it preserved key original features including its 55-foot screen tower, ticket booth, concession and projector building, office wing, and highway attraction board. In its early years it also offered a playground and miniature golf, reflecting the family appeal of postwar drive-ins. Recognized on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places in 2007, it later closed, briefly reopened, hosted Barter Theatre productions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reopened in 2025 after renovation.
