Approximately 10 yards north of this spot was the finish line where Don Bowden, a University of California at Berkeley trackman, became the first American citizen in track and field history to run a mile in under four minutes. He achieved the historic time of 3:58.7 on June 1, 1957, on a clay track at what was known as Baxter Stadium during the annual Pacific Association Championships.
