The Samuel Elijah Holt Farm, with buildings dating from 1907 to about 1930, is one of the last surviving examples of an active homestead built by early settlers of South Jordan. Samuel Holt, born August 30, 1868, purchased the farm from his father, an English immigrant, in 1906, and the next year began construction of a fine 10-room house for his wife and their 12 children. All but one of the original farm buildings remain and continue to serve the farm. Holt was a successful stock raiser and farmer, and the house, outbuildings, and surrounding acreage that remain symbolize his success in business, at church, and at home. He served as South Jordan's third bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and during his 11 years as bishop, the farm provided food for the poor and needy in the area and also served as the tithing storehouse. In 1956, Samuel's daughter Mabel Holt Nelson and her husband Martin Henry Nelson purchased the house and maintained the property as a sheep farm. The farmstead now serves as a public gathering place for the community.
