Near Summerville, South Carolina, this archaeological site preserves the ruins of an early meeting house and an adjacent burial ground that together reflect several eras of local history. Built about 1700, the meeting house belonged to the region’s colonial landscape before it was burned in 1781 during the American Revolution, rebuilt in 1794, and finally destroyed in the Charleston earthquake of 1886. Surviving remains include parts of all four corners, with the tallest section reaching about 9 feet, and visible wall foundations. The cemetery connects the ruins to the community that once worshiped there, and the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
