Talma is the only town in the United States with that name. Asa Coplen founded it as Bloomingsburg. A post office was established on June 13, 1851, and the town plat was not recorded until January 7, 1862. An addition to Bloomingsburg was recorded on Mar. 1, 1880. By petition to the U.S. Post Office, the name was changed to Talma on Jan. 25, 1896; Wm. Roundtree Kubley found the name in a word puzzle. The post office was discontinued on Jan. 2, 1907. On Apr. 3, 1974, a tornado severely damaged the town.
