Delaware Seashore State Park, created in 1965 near Dewey Beach, occupies a narrow barrier strip between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth and Indian River bays. Long shaped by the shifting inlet between the bays and the sea, the area became easier to cross after jetties fixed Indian River Inlet in 1939. Renamed in 1967, the park now offers about 6 miles of ocean and bay shoreline supporting swimming, fishing, boating, camping, and nature access. Its historic centerpiece is the Indian River Life-Saving Station, built in 1876 to aid ships off this once-dangerous coast and preserved as a reminder of the shoreline’s earlier hazards.
