From Stave Creek to Jackson Creek, one of the areas where salt was made during 1862-64, furnaces of native stone were built and salt water from dug wells was evaporated by boiling in large kettles. Salt production reached six hundred bushels per day, and the price ranged from ten to forty dollars a bushel. Workers were exempt from military service. Works in operation included Nordlinger's, Booth's, Clarke, and state and private operations. A town of four thousand people, along with a saw mill and brick factory, was located here.
