Established in 1911 as Science Hill, this school stood one half mile east of the memorial site and was later renamed Britton School in honor of the Britton pioneer family. A church at the same site also served as a grade school. The first school enumeration, completed in June 1912 for district #108 of the Gracemont School System, reported 18 families, with Oscar E. Bare as school clerk. When Britton, one of the oldest schools in the area, closed in 1950, it had 24 families, most of them farmers, along with 1 oil field worker, 1 mechanic, and 1 day laborer, and J.E. Mashaney was school clerk. The site lies directly under Indian Head Rock, home of the Caddo Indian Tribe, and former residents and friends gather there each September for a school community reunion.
