In 1910, citizens of Spartanburg City and County and the Spartan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy honored Confederate soldiers and sailors from the area. The tribute called on future generations to honor the memory and heroic deeds of Southern soldiers, who it said fought for rights guaranteed under the Constitution. It presented four years of Confederate armies contending against great odds, enduring incredible hardships, and ending their struggle only when the South was exhausted and could no longer furnish recruits and supplies. It placed their service in the span from Fort Sumter to Appomattox, 1861 to 1865, and expressed remembrance of the past, faithfulness to the present, and hope for the future.
