Pretty Rock National Wildlife Refuge is an eight hundred-acre refuge in North Dakota, about ten miles south of New Leipzig, managed as an easement on privately owned land through cooperation between landowners and the U.S. government under oversight from Audubon National Wildlife Refuge. Its importance lies in serving as an isolated stopover for migrating whooping cranes. That role was highlighted in 2002, when six adult cranes and one juvenile were recorded there, demonstrating the refuge’s value as a temporary resting place for one of North America’s most closely watched migratory birds.
