This area was the home of the Wyandot, who fished in these waters for burbot, sturgeon, and walleye. Among native people of this region, the bear, known as the mukwa, represented both strength and a healing spirit. One of the twelve clans of the Wyandot was the Bear Clan, and its members alone could wear the bears' claws, teeth, and necklaces of the mukwa.
