A sprawling steel plant once occupied close to 1800 acres between South Bethlehem and the Lehigh River. After it shut down, the company undertook a major environmental clean-up that left the site safe for future use. In the years that followed, citizens, city government, company executives, and developers worked to create a redevelopment plan that balanced economic development with preservation of the location’s historical significance. The remaining Bethlehem Steel buildings stand as relics of more than 130 years of industrial history, including both triumphs and failures, and as reminders of the people who labored there and produced the steel that built America.
