On the northwest side of Summer Island in northern Lake Michigan, this stratified archaeological site preserves repeated occupations spanning more than a thousand years at a favored harbor-side location. Evidence of Middle Woodland, Upper Mississippian, and Early Historic or Protohistoric use includes house remains, hearths, storage and refuse pits, drying racks, artifacts, and preserved plant and animal remains. Excavations showed that pottery from the earliest well-defined occupation, about 70 to 250 A.D., helped refine Upper Great Lakes ceramic chronology. Later layers reveal hunting, fishing, and broad regional ties, while an Early Historic camp with French trade goods and Ontario Iroquois vessels shows exchange and cultural interaction during early European contact.
