Paul Eliot Green was a dramatist, novelist, teacher, and humanitarian whose birthplace is situated 2.1 miles north. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1927, originated the Symphonic Drama, and wrote 16 such works, including "The Lost Colony." He was a lifelong champion of racial equality and an implacable foe of militarism and capital punishment, and he was North Carolina's Dramatist Laureate.
