A freedom-themed mural in Mexico, New York, was completed on July 10, 2004, by artist Kenneth C. Burke of Syracuse, New York, and established by Murals in Mexico and the Greater Mexico Chamber of Commerce. Its main theme is freedom, shown through scenes of the Revolutionary War of Independence in 1776, the U.S. Liberty Walking Half-Dollar as symbolism of financial support of freedom by Mexico business and commercial interests, and Underground Railroad activity tied to the abolitionist movement. The mural also incorporates local historic elements including Mexico Academy and Central School on Main Street, a cheese factory in Colosse in the Town of Mexico, Grace Episcopal Church on Church Street, old buildings on Main Street, farming and agriculture in the Town of Mexico, and Osborn's Mill on the Little Salmon River at the Main Street Bridge, one of several mills in the area. Audrey Munson, a local resident, is identified as the model for the coin.
