The Newark Earthworks were used by Indigenous people up until their removal from the land. In 1862, archaeologists James and Charles Salisbury created a map that is the most accurate record of the Newark Earthworks. Over time, farming and construction led to the earthworks being partially destroyed and disconnected. Today, the Octagon Earthworks, Great Circle Earthworks, and a portion of Wright Square are all that remain. In 1892, the Octagon Earthworks were preserved for use as a training area for the Ohio National Guard. Moundbuilders Golf Course was established in 1911, with the golf course laid out within and alongside the earthworks. In 1933, the Ohio History Connection took ownership of the site, with the golf course holding a long-term lease. In 2025, the Ohio History Connection took full ownership of the site, with the golf course agreeing to move operations elsewhere.
