Indiana Harbor East Breakwater Light is an active lighthouse at the mouth of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal on Lake Michigan, marking the end of the harbor’s east breakwater in a heavily industrial landscape near East Chicago. The harbor was created beginning in 1901 to support large-scale industry, especially Inland Steel, with dredging, breakwater construction, and canal work continuing into the early 1900s. Although an earlier light seems to have stood there by 1920, the present lighthouse dates from 1935. Its steel Art Deco tower, later modernized with a new beacon, is a rare Indiana lighthouse and a recognized historic aid to navigation.
