Packsaddle Mountain, a twin-peaked hill in eastern Llano County near Kingsland, stands out in the Hill Country for its distinctive packsaddle shape, prominent height, and varied geology. Covered mainly with live oak and Ashe juniper, it was long associated with local mining lore, including traditions of Spanish gold seekers, the lost mine of Los Almagres linked with Jim Bowie, and unsuccessful gold prospecting in the 1920s. The mountain is best known as the site of the August 4, 1873, Fight of Packsaddle Mountain, described as the last major Native American battle in the area, when ranchers pursuing raiders encountered Apache tribesmen and several men on both sides were killed or wounded.
