The 111th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas M. Walker in Cobham's 2nd Brigade, Geary's 2nd Division, Slocum's 12th Corps, was recruited in Erie, Pennsylvania, and joined the Army of the Potomac. On October 28, 1863, it joined the Army of the Cumberland and near midnight at Wauhatchie Station, Tennessee, was attacked by troops of Jenkins' Brigade of Hood's Division, six small Confederate regiments under Colonel Bratton. The regiment helped hold the enemy in check while the brigade formed its line, and after three hours of fighting the enemy was repulsed and returned to camps on Lookout. On November 24, 1863, the regiment was ordered to assault the rugged sides of Lookout Mountain. Under cover of fog it marched to Light's Mills and up the mountainside until the right of the line rested under the palisades; then, facing front with the line extending up and down the mountain, it advanced and forced back the enemy, gaining a point extending from the palisades toward and near the Craven House. Facing right, it gained a position under the palisades, where the enemy on the mountain top rolled rocks and dropped lighted shells on the men as they stood with their backs against the palisades under fire from sharpshooters and from works farther down the mountain. Early on the morning of November 25 it was discovered that the enemy had evacuated the works, and some of the regiment's more adventurous men climbed rude ladders to gain the summit. Leaving Lookout, the regiment crossed the valley toward Missionary Ridge. Its loss was one killed and eight wounded.
