The original river gauge was at the old Swing Span Bridge in 1891. In 1936, it was moved to the foot of Mount Vernon Street at this spot. A record flood reading of 17.9 feet was reached on April 24, 1965. In 1993, the gauge reading was moved to below the two bridges, and this gauge was decommissioned.
