The Historic Area
History
At Popes Creek Plantation, George Washington was born into the plantation culture he would know his entire life. Although no visible vestiges of the plantation remain, the site includes exhibits, buildings, and interpreters that give a sense of the lifestyle that helped shape his values. The site of the main house, George Washington's birthplace, is clearly marked, and the surrounding memorial area was constructed in the 1930s for the bicentennial of his birth. A working colonial farm created in 1968 reflects the sights, sounds, and methodical pace of Washington's times, where interpreters may perform tasks required to keep an 18th-century plantation operating.
