In the early 1920s, an emigration to California began from the Midwest, with families traveling west on the National Old Trails Highway and proceeding along Barstow’s Main Street. The Depression and dust storms of the 1930s sent more families to California seeking work, and some ended their journey in Barstow and made it their home. In 1926, the road they traveled became Route 66, the “Mother Road.”
