Metal Ford
Hohenwald, Tennessee

In 1811, Alexander Wilson wrote of being roused from a melancholy reverie by the roaring of Buffalo River, which he forded with great difficulty. At this place, travelers on the Natchez Trace crossed the river, which was fordable except after heavy rains. The ford was named for its stone bottom, which reminded frontier travelers of the stone-surfaced, or “metaled,” roads of the day.
