On July 21, 1780, American forces under Major William R. Davie captured a British convoy of provisions, spirits, and clothing destined for British troops at Hanging Rock near Flat Rock, then withdrew at dusk with British captives and their horses. While retreating with prisoners mounted two to the horse, Davie’s force was ambushed by British troops several miles west of here on Beaver Creek. Nearly all the British prisoners were killed or wounded, while one American was killed and two were wounded.
