Anne Frank, born in Germany in June 1929 and killed at Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in March 1945, became through her diary the voice of one and a half million children killed in the Holocaust. Her words, “In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart,” stand beside Martin Niemöller’s warning drawn from his experience as a Protestant pastor imprisoned for seven years in a Nazi concentration camp: when Socialists, Trade Unionists, and Jews were persecuted and others did not speak out because they were not among them, in the end no one remained to speak for those finally taken.
